roses in the sun
(copyright © 2001 T. R. Hoatson)
she skirts across the
darkened street
fall leaves get kicked up by her feet
she picks up her pace, her mind is beat
thinks about gazing at her favorite star, but she makes a beeline for her car
with traffic, home's still an hour away
she'll stop and smell the roses another day
he checks his watch and man, he just shakes his head
there's no way he's gonna make it by when he said
the door slams shut and off he's fled
he doesn't see the couple there on the grass, arm in arm as he runs past
he's lost in thought about what he's gonna say
he'll stop and smell the roses another day
roses in the sun stand tall for everyone
you gotta walk instead of run, before your last day is done
she pulls back the blind as the coffee's done
squints her eyes into the morning sun
songbirds fly by, but she sees none
too many things are on her mind, she's worked herself into being blind
without notice she starts to pray
she'll stop and smell the roses another day
he pulls off the exit for the shore
he dreams about the sandals that he once wore
but he doesn't get to feel the power of the ocean's roar
'cause there's a detour up ahead, decides to go back to the highway instead
the toll taker's now lifeless as he stops to pay
he'll stop and smell the roses another day
roses in the sun stand tall for everyone
you gotta walk instead of run, before your last day on earth is done
